Kanya - Essential Oil Based All Natural Skincare

On one of my recent Instagram #allnaturalskincare research rounds I stumbled upon Kanya.

Kanya creates essential oil based skincare, and what immediately attracted me to their line of products, is the fact that at the core of their products is ancient yogic Chakra Balancing and Aromatherapy. Kanya has created essential oil-based recipes that work on distinct chakras or energy centers of our body.

When I reached out to Kanya to request a PR package in exchange for an honest review, I was contacted by the Founder Vernika herself to speak to me in person and tell me more about herself and what motivated her to create Kanya.

During our conversation we found out that we are two kindred spirits and that we live quite close to each other, so we decided to meet in person and that meeting inspired me to invite Vernika for an On Camera Interview, because not only is Vernika an inspiring person who has created a beautiful product, but she is also a woman we can all admire, because despite having a family she is also an empowered #bosslady.

As I am about to give birth to my first child, it is women like Vernika I look up to and draw inspiration from. No doubt my role as a mum will be one of the most important and sacred journeys I am already on, but that doesn't mean that my goals as an accomplished singer songwriter will be put on hold forever.

Laurel & Reed Subscription Box

Since I found out that I am pregnant I went on a mission to find and try the best of the best non toxic, all natural, preferably organic and cruelty free skin care, hair care and nail care that is out there...

On my quest I have recently discovered an amazing company called Laurel & Reed. Laurel & Reed is committed to the clean beauty movement and wants every woman, especially those with suppressed immune systems to benefit from all-natural and non-toxic beauty.

This is an unboxing of the June 2018 Laurel & Reed Subscription Box! A great all-natural and cruelty-free monthly subscription box, great if you like full-sized products in your box! See product descriptions, photos, ingredients lists, etc by clicking the links below! Products Mentioned: Laurel & Reed Subscription Box, $49.95 Per Box https://laurelandreed.com/

And here are my first Impressions:

COSMOS BOTANICALS Face Wash - 3.7oz - $32
Smells of Lavender and has a nice foamy consistency. Left my skin feeling very clean and fresh. I have very sensitive breakout prone skin and this wash has not caused any irritations as of now.

NHCO BOTANICAL BODYCARE The Lip Scrubber - 1.25oz- $14
Love the Lip Scrubber. I have to put a bit of effort into actually using it, but that's because sometimes I get so tired at night that there is no energy left to use it. But it feels wonderful on my lips. Tastes of sugar and blood orange.

NOTO BOTANICS Large Deep Serum - 2oz - $49.50
Haven't tried it yet. I am always a bit apprehensive about trying to many different things on my face at the same time. So when the right moment comes I will give you an update!

PROVISION SCENTS Las Flores - 1.5oz - $125
For me this particular scent turned out to be a little bit too botanical and old fashioned. Something I will probably give away as a nice present to a more mature woman.

Vapour Organic Beauty

I stumbled upon Vapour Organic Beauty using my trusted hashtag search for #organicmakeup on Instagram. I saw they have a wide variety of different products and the mostly positive reviews got me curious to try some of their product to see if we might be a fit, and to see if I could potentially replace my usual makeup like the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Liquid 24H Longwear SPF 15 Foundation among others.

In the above image you see me wearing the Halo Illuminator, Siren Lipstick and Black Eyeliner. For a more detailed product review head right over to my "Videos" section!

On their website Vapour Beauty states 10 Commitments:

They are always Cruelty Free, The company supports organic farming, all of their tubes and bottles are recyclable, all their products are handcrafted in Taos, they use passive solar daylighting and windpower in their labs, offices and warehouses. Their products are packaged in Forest Stewardship council certified paper, which basically means that the paper Vapour uses, has been sourced in an environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically viable way, and to top it all off their packaging is printed with Soy print, which is much more environmentally friendly and makes paper products easier to recycle, than the traditional petroleum-based ink.

I absolutely love that Vapour Organic Beauty is so conscious of our environment, but let’s talk about the actual products that I have tried:

Stratus Soft Focus Skin Perfecting Primer

Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation - #123

Atmosphere Luminous Foundation - #123

Siren Lipstick - Coquette

Halo Illuminator - Moonlight

And the Mesmerize Eyeliner - Ink

Atmosphere Luminous Foundation versus Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation

I have combination to oily skin, and what I ended up preferring is the Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation, because it gave me more of a matte finish. The Soft Focus Primer however I found just a bit to oily for my skin. I will be looking for something more mattifying. Being a performer, and a girl who got left with emotional as well physical scarring, caused by pretty bad Teen acne, the proper coverage is extremely important to me and I found that the Atmosphere Soft Focus Foundation definitely satisfied me needs on that regard. The Atmosphere Luminous foundation in my case didn't perform well for me, especially on the very hot summer days here on the East Coast, and the coverage was very light. I do recommend Luminous foundation to someone with drier skin who prefers a dewy natural look. The ingredients of the formula are mostly organic and on their website it states: "The organic and wildcrafted antioxidant-rich ingredients in this breakthrough formula include brightening Camellia and Vapour’s proprietary Herbal Enlightenment Complex: Frankincense, Tulsi and Lotus to help soothe, calm and protect." There is something very reassuring knowing that I am putting on something this good on my skin. The only thing missing for me is the SPF, but you can easily apply your SPF before the foundation.

HALO Illuminator

The HALO Illuminator in Moonlight has a very beautiful silvery sheen and the fact that it’s made of organic ingredient just turns it into the holy grail of all illuminators for me.

Siren Lipstick

So far I have tried the Siren Lipstick in the color Coquette. The lipstick has a very bright pigment when you look at it but it actually goes on a bit more sheer – more what you would expect from a well pigmented lip gloss, but that’s not a deal breaker to be. It’s just to give you a heads up in case you are looking for a high density pigmented lipstick. It also has a very delicate and pleasant smell to it...and I am all about he smell when it comes to my cosmetic products.

Mezmerize Eyeliner

The mesmerize eyeliner I love, because I will be mainly using it to for my water line. It went on really smooth, performs much better than the Tarte eyeliner that I have – because the side that I was recommended to use for my water line completely fell apart for some reason, while the liquid side is working perfectly. And again there is something so soothing about knowing that I am using an all organic non toxic product that is so close to my eyes. My eyes are super sensitive when it comes to eyeliners, eye creams and mascara and there have been plenty of times where I have experienced irritation and itchiness and I usually notice it after a couple of hours. I have used this particular eyeliner a couple of times now and am very happy to report there has not been any irritation or discomfort.

Time to come Clean

When I found out that I am pregnant and started informing myself on different things pregnancy related, I heard and read from various sources, that many of the cosmetics that I have been using every day can have chemicals, like Parabens, synthetic colors and fragrances and other crazy stuff in them, that can negatively affect not only our health but also our growing baby’s development while still in the womb. Check out this article by Huffington Post Contributor Vanessa Cunninham, listing the 10 toxic ingredients to avoid and please do your research when you buy anything that you put on your skin or in your mouth. A fairly common cosmetic component called Triclosan can disrupt our thyroid function, and since I was recently diagnosed with a thyroid issue I am of course left wondering if it has anything to do with my recent diagnosis.

So when I found all of this out, I naturally I freaked out and decided to go on a quest to find the most amazing nontoxic all natural skin care hair care and nail care products that are our there. Quick Disclaimer: I am not a Beauty expert in any way, in fact I still don’t know how to properly apply fake eyelashes, but since I am a professional singer and recording artist (www.darjasmusic.com) I am an extremely active beauty product consumer (aka Addict lol).

I gotta be honest with you guys, once I started delving deeper and deeper into my research I realized that I should have done this a very long time ago. I consider myself a very conscious and aware person, but for some reason when it came to my personal care, the priority was always: what will give me the best coverage on stage? What will make my hair look shiny? What will even out my skin tone? I thought I was supporting cruelty free brands, thinking that in our modern world the best and biggest brands have long ago given up the cruel and insane practice of animal testing, but fact of the matter is that almost all of my favorite products that I was using up to date, like La Mer, Lancome, Armani etc. are distributing their products in China, which inadvertently means that they cannot call themselves 100% cruelty free. A very disappointing realization indeed.

China is one of the last countries in the world that still has a legal requirement for animal testing of imported cosmetics and domestically manufactured ones, with some exceptions. If you would like to find out more on this subject I stumbled upon a very comprehensive article published by Allure Magazine, which explains how some of the big companies are actually funding efforts to overturn China’s animal testing requirements. For now I want to wish the good people involved in these efforts, much love and success with it, but in the meantime I would like to start investing in and supporting companies that are achieving the status of non-toxic and 100% cruelty free status as I type these words.

Good bye to my Lancome 24h foundation, good bye to my La Mer Serum (and hello extra cash in my bank account), good bye to my NARS Concealer (why oh why did you decide to go into China and abandon your loyal customers right here at home?). But then again were these products ever non-toxic?

I am officially on a mission to replace all my usual cosmetics, with nontoxic, all natural, pregnancy friendly, ideally organic, and cruelty free cosmetic products, that are not only better for my skin but also perform well. As a performer, my skin hair and nail care has to perform together with me, so let the journey begin!

I decided that on my quest to finding the right companies to feature, a certain criteria would have to be met:

  1. Product quality and ingredients
  2. Product Packaging
  3. Personal Touch and Customer Care
  4. The story that made the Company

I really hope you will enjoy going on this exploration with me because I am beyond excited to have you on board and I am fully committed to try out and curate only the best of the very best for you!

Much Love and Success to you all Always!
